Public Relations and Media Relations

Build relationships and earn trust.

Interstate PR helps organizations in Sacramento, CA, and beyond communicate with the people, communities, and media that shape how they’re understood.

From media relations and announcements to community relations and executive communications, we help organizations be heard clearly, credibly, and at the moments that matter.

Does any of this sound familiar?

You have an important announcement, but don't know how to get it noticed.

Your organization is doing meaningful work, but the public doesn't know about it.

Your message isn't reaching the people who matter most.

You're getting attention, but not the kind you want.

Your leaders need to speak with reporters, or with the community, and want to be prepared.

You're navigating a sensitive issue and need to communicate carefully.

Good public relations starts with understanding what matters, who needs to hear it, and why they should care.

Your reputation is built on more than what you say.

Reputation is what people come to believe about an organization, based on what it says, what it shows, and what it does. Public relations can’t manufacture that. It can help people understand what’s true.

A media placement can introduce your organization to thousands of people. But public relations extends well beyond the headlines. It’s about relationships with journalists, community leaders, partners, and the people whose trust matters to your organization.

Relationships with the people it serves are built on accurate understanding, and the organization is heard when it matters.

Relationships first. Headlines second.

We start by understanding the organization, the audience, and the opportunity. Then we develop a communications strategy built around a clear message and a genuine reason for people to pay attention.

We don’t believe every announcement deserves a press release or every story belongs on the evening news. The right approach depends on what you’re trying to accomplish.

It’s Tell, don’t sell, applied to public relations: we help organizations share what’s genuinely true and worth knowing, and we never promise coverage. Editorial decisions belong to news organizations. See our approach →

MONOPOLY: Sacramento and Napa Valley Editions

One iconic game. Two communities, each with its own story.

For Top Trumps USA, maker of official city editions of MONOPOLY under license from Hasbro, Interstate PR led media relations for two regional editions in 2022, serving as the media contact for each announcement.

In Napa Valley, the campaign began with a public announcement at the Visit Napa Valley Welcome Center alongside Napa’s mayor and Visit Napa Valley’s president and CEO, inviting residents to suggest places for the board, and ended with the edition’s unveiling in October. In Sacramento, Mr. Monopoly unveiled the new edition to media at the Kimpton Sawyer Hotel in November, celebrating the region’s landmarks and businesses.

Questions we hear about public relations.

What's the difference between public relations and advertising?

Advertising is paid space: you control the message and pay for the placement. Public relations earns attention through relationships and stories worth telling, so the credibility comes from someone else choosing to share it.

Can you guarantee media coverage?

No, and no honest firm can. We develop newsworthy stories, build relationships with journalists, and pursue relevant coverage, but editorial decisions belong to news organizations. What we can promise is a clear, credible story told to the right people.

Do you write press releases?

Yes, when a press release is the right tool. Often a direct conversation with the right reporter, a community event, or a clear announcement on your own channels works better.

Do you handle crisis communications?

Yes. When sensitive issues arise, we help organizations communicate thoughtfully, accurately, and promptly. Most of our work is proactive, building the relationships and trust that make difficult moments easier to navigate.

Is Interstate PR a marketing agency?

No. Interstate PR is a public relations firm that builds trust for companies and organizations by telling their story and managing their brand. Public relations is both our discipline and one of our six connected routes.

Where are you headed?
